What is dragon boat racing?

Dragon boat racing is an exciting team sport, originating in China over 2000 years ago. Up to 20 paddlers use a single-blade paddle to power boats through the water. A helm steers the boat from the back, and a drummer sits up front beating in time with the paddlers, and the boats have dragons’ heads and tails, of course.

UK dragon boat competitions take place across the country over various race lengths, and with different crew categories. There are also national teams, organised by age, competing internationally.

Only by working as a team, with synchronised paddling, can a crew be efficient and competitive. Dragon boat racing builds great team spirit, as well as being excellent for physical health and mental well-being.

Who is it for?
Dragon boat racing is surprisingly diverse and accessible. We accept crew members from 12 and up. Some of our paddlers have disabilities, or are in recovery from injury or illness; some consider themselves sporty, and others are just starting out.

If you have a physical disability or injury, we can help you decide if dragon boating meets your exercise needs. Please note, we are not able to give professional medical advice, but can discuss our experiences of paddling, and what it takes to train and race.
